When Your Birth Journey Looks Different Than You Imagined
For many parents, months are spent imagining the moment they finally meet their baby.
Maybe you’ve thought about how your birth might unfold, prepared your hospital bag, or pictured those first precious moments of holding your little one close. While we can prepare and hope for a certain experience, every birth has its own story to tell.
Sometimes that story looks different from the one you imagined.
If your journey into parenthood unfolded in a way you didn’t expect, I want you to know that your experience matters.
As a newborn, baby, family and maternity photographer, I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful families, each with their own unique journey. Some babies arrive after a calm and straightforward birth, while others make their entrance through inductions, caesareans, assisted deliveries or after needing some extra care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Although every story is different, one thing remains the same: the love, strength and connection that surrounds each baby.
Every journey into parenthood is unique
It’s easy to look around and see images of smiling parents with sleepy newborn babies, but every family’s first days together look different.
For some, those early moments are spent settling into life at home with their baby. For others, they may involve recovering after surgery, spending time in hospital, finding their feeding rhythm, or watching their tiny baby grow stronger each day.
These moments are all part of your story.
The way your baby entered the world does not define the bond you share with them. The love you have for your baby began long before you held them in your arms, and it continues to grow through every cuddle, every milestone and every moment together.
The moments you share are what matter most
Whether your first cuddle happened straight after birth or a little later, whether your first family photograph was taken in your home, at the hospital, or beside your baby’s cot, those memories are precious.
Over the years, I’ve learnt that the images families treasure most are often the simple, honest moments. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the way you look at your baby, the quiet moments of connection, and the little details that tell the story of those early days.
There is no single way to begin your journey as a parent. There is only your story, and it deserves to be remembered.
Be gentle with yourself
The transition into parenthood brings so many emotions, and sometimes those feelings stay with us long after we leave the hospital.
If your birth experience has left you with feelings you weren’t expecting, giving yourself time, space and kindness can be an important part of moving forward. Talking to someone you trust, sharing your experience with other parents, or simply allowing yourself to acknowledge how you feel can make a real difference.
Your story is important, and so are you.
