What to Buy Before Baby Arrives

(and What Can Wait)

Preparing for a baby is exciting, but it can also feel like a lot. One quick search and suddenly it seems like you need everything, all at once.

Working with families across Suffolk, I see both ends of the scale. Beautifully finished nurseries halfway through pregnancy, and last-minute shopping sprees just before baby arrives and the reality sits somewhere in the middle. You actually don’t need as much as you think.

Here’s a simple, honest guide to what’s worth having ready before baby arrives, and what you can leave until later.

What to Buy Before Baby Arrives

These are the practical essentials that will make those first couple of weeks feel that bit easier.

A safe place for baby to sleep

You don’t need a fully finished nursery straight away, but you do need somewhere safe for your baby to sleep. This could be a next-to-me, a moses basket, or a cot. Keep it simple – a firm mattress, fitted sheets, and no extras for safety.

Most babies sleep in their parents’ room to begin with anyway, so there’s no pressure to have everything perfectly set up from day one.

A car seat (fitted properly)

This is one thing you can’t leave until later.

You’ll need a car seat to bring your baby home, and it’s worth getting it fitted or checked properly if you can. Have a quick practice adjusting the straps too. It’s much easier to figure out before you’re sleep-deprived. I can recommend a fantastic local shop in Ipswich called ‘Little Bubbas Baby Shop’ and she will be able to give you expert advice on car seat safety.

A small, practical wardrobe

It’s very easy to overbuy clothes. In reality, you only need a small, simple selection to start with:

  • 6 to 8 sleepsuits
  • 4 to 6 bodysuits
  • A couple of cardigans
  • Hats, depending on the season
  • Plenty of muslins

Babies grow quickly, and sizing can be unpredictable. Keeping it minimal at the start saves both money and space.

Feeding essentials

However you plan to feed your baby, focus on what you’ll need for the first few weeks rather than every possible scenario.

For breastfeeding:

  • Nursing bras
  • Breast pads
  • Nipple cream
  • A feeding pillow if you’d find it helpful

For formula feeding:

  • Bottles
  • Steriliser
  • Formula

You can always add to this once you know what works best for you and your baby.

Nappies and changing basics

You don’t need a full changing station stocked with everything imaginable.

Start with:

  • 1 to 2 packs of newborn nappies
  • Cotton pads or wipes
  • Nappy cream
  • A simple changing mat

A way to carry your baby

A pram is great, especially for getting out for some fresh air but many parents find a sling or carrier just as valuable in those early weeks. It keeps your baby close and leaves your hands free, which can make everyday life that bit easier.

What Can Wait

This is where you can ease the pressure, and avoid spending money on things you might not actually need.

A fully styled nursery
It can come together over time. Your baby won’t notice whether the shelves are styled or the walls are decorated.

Toys
Newborns don’t need much stimulation. You are everything to them, one or two simple items is plenty.

Buying everything in bulk
You won’t know which nappies suit your baby’s skin or which bottles they’ll prefer until you try. Start small and adjust as you go.

A quick word on budget

It’s easy to fall into the mindset of needing to buy everything before baby arrives.

But this is also a time when many families are adjusting financially, especially with maternity or paternity leave approaching.

That’s exactly why I created a simple Monthly Budget Planner. It’s designed to help you feel more in control, with space to map out your spending, set priorities, and plan ahead without the overwhelm.

The things you’ll actually remember

Try to give yourself time to slow down in these final weeks. From photographing so many mums-to-be and those early newborn days, I can tell you this: The things that stay with you aren’t the perfectly organised drawers or the matching sets.

It’s the feeling of your baby moving before they arrive.
The quiet moments when they’re brand new in your arms.
The way you look at them without even realising.

Have the essentials ready, and let the rest fall into place.

And if you’d like a bit of help feeling organised before everything changes, the budget planner is there for you.
